Katherine Heigl and her mother Nancy founded the Jason Debus Heigl Foundaton in memory of Jason Heigl, Nancy’s son and Katherine’s brother who was killed in a car accident in 1986 when he was fifteen years old. The website states that: “ Jason loved all animals, especially dogs, cats, and monkeys, and lived his short life extending compassion and kindness to all creatures”.
The foundation’s goal is to “ raise awareness of inhumane treatment of animals, support non-profit rescue efforts, assist homeless shelter animals with rescue and medical treatment, fund and encourage free spay/neuter clinics, place rescue dogs and cats in loving homes, and educate the public about the horrors of puppy mills and dog fighting”. Heigl supports many charities including: AIDS Healthcare Foundation, GLAAD, Donate Life America and Operation of Hope.
