Ed McMahon is dead at 86. He follows his long-time friend and side-kick, Johnny Carson who passed away in February of 2005.
McMahon and Carson first worked together on a television game show called Who Do You Trust from 1957 until Carson replaced Jack Parr on the Tonight Show in 1962. McMahon played “second banana” to Carson for thirty years on the Tonight Show. John Digney, McMahon’s longtime publicist said he brought “elegance, humor and a new sense of importance” to the role of second banana.
From 1983 to 1995, McMahon hosted Star Search, a talent competition show. Several people launched their careers after being on the show. Some of them were Christina Aguilera, Sawyer Brown, Drew Carey, Brad Garrett, Martin Lawrence, Dennis Miller, Rosie O”Donnell, LeAnn Rimes, Adam Sandler, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears and Usher.
Ed will surely be missed by all those who knew and loved him. Possibly it’s Johnny’s turn to welcome Ed. Heeeeeeeeeere’s Ed!
